George Stubbs was born in Liverpool, England, in 1756. He was the son of a currier and leather merchant, and he spent much of his childhood around horses. This early exposure to horses would later influence his art, as he became one of the greatest painters of equestrian art in history.

Stubbs began his career as a self-taught artist, studying anatomy and dissection to better understand the structure and movement of horses. He also spent time studying the works of other artists, including Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck.

In 1769, Stubbs moved to York, where he began to establish himself as a portrait painter. However, it was his paintings of horses that would bring him lasting fame. His first major equestrian painting was Mares and Foals in a Landscape, which he completed in 1769.

Over the course of his career, Stubbs painted many other famous works featuring horses, including Whistlejacket, Gimcrack on Newmarket Heath, and The Lion Attacking a Horse. His paintings were known for their incredible attention to detail and their ability to capture the beauty and majesty of these magnificent animals.

In addition to his paintings, Stubbs also wrote a book called The Anatomy of the Horse, which is still considered a classic work on equine anatomy today. The book features detailed illustrations of horses’ skeletons, muscles, and organs, and it helped establish Stubbs as an authority on the subject.

Stubbs died in 1815 at the age of 59. His legacy lives on through his stunning paintings of horses, which continue to inspire artists and art lovers around the world.
